4 Creative Ways to Use Household Items As Curtain Hardware

Curtains can add flair and class to a room’s decor, especially when it comes to fancy rods and tie-backs. To avoid spending too much on rods and tie-backs here are a few hardware pieces you can create from everyday household items.

Braced With Bracelets – Many women’s bracelets and men’s cuffs are the right size for cinching single-width drapery panels. Put bracelets and cuffs to creative use as tiebacks by placing them around drapery panels and hanging freely, or create a more permanent look by attaching them to the wall with Velcro. Source: HGTV

Branching Out – Sometimes the perfect object for a lightweight drapery rod may be sitting right outside your window. Branches can make for excellent, sculptural drapery rods with a few simple do-it-yourself updates. Search for a branch with the proper length and width to fit above a window and handle the weight of the chosen drapery panel. Next, cut it to size and spray-paint it in a color which contrasts well against the wall. Lastly, secure standoffs, ready-made drapery rod brackets or L brackets directly to the wall using plastic drywall anchors, then attach the branch with screws or bailing wire. Source: Wasconia5

Simple Conduit – I bought four pieces of electrical conduit, four packs of wooden rod hangers and some plastic tubing. Oh, and a hacksaw. The cheapest one I could find ($3)…which turned out to be a not so good idea.  First step was to measure and cut all the conduit. I put (more like stuffed) some plastic tubing in the joints (to make sure the curtain tabs wouldn’t fall between the cracks) and it worked great. Next step…make the curtains. had to make back-tab curtains to that I could lace them around the hardware and have a clean finished look.  Source: DomesticImperfection

Utensil Curtain Tie Back – To create this handy hook, drill a small hole approximately one inch in from the end of the fork’s handle. Hold the utensil faceup, then use pliers to bend the prongs back toward the handle, making sure to form a rounded C shape rather than a V. Finish by screwing the tie back into your window molding.
