3 Window Spring-Cleaning Basics

With spring in full bloom and the beautiful weather outside, now is a great time to clean windows. Here are the basics.

Clean
Dirty panes are no problem when you use rubber-edged squeegees, which are quicker and more effective than cloth or newspaper. They come in a variety of sizes — and a screw-on extension will let you reach high spots.
To start, dip a sponge into a bucket of warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Wet window; rub dirt away. Dampen squeegee; starting at an upper corner, draw it down pane from top to bottom. Repeat, overlapping strokes and wiping rubber edge with sponge after each stroke. (For large windows, ”snake” squeegee back and forth; then touch up edges.) Dry windowsills with a cloth. Refresh
The changing of the seasons is the perfect time to give your home a little refresh. It doesn’t have to be a grueling or expensive project — something as simple as swapping out your pillows and throws, adding a new potted container to your entry, or painting your front door a bold new color — can make a big impact. This month in my home, I’m going to address my window treatments. Since I want this to be a somewhat simple and manageable task, I’m not talking about refreshing every window! The window in my living room needs the most attention, and for me, will also make the biggest impact because it’s the focal point of the room we use most often. Maybe you have a window in need in a room you never got around to finishing, those dreaded rental blinds still hanging, or you realize your bedroom could benefit from a heavier drape instead of sheers. Sparkle
With the spring sunshine flooding through the glass the effect is spoilt somewhat if you’ve got grubby marks and smears all over your windows. It couldn’t be easier to revive your windows and the good news is it’s perfectly possible to do so using simple, eco-friendly household products. One age-old housewives favourite is to use a solution of vinegar and water, applied and buffed down with newspaper. You’ll need a solution that’s one part vinegar to one part water, and you can use a chamois leather cloth to apply the solution to the windows and then newspaper to buff them to a shine.
Aside from cleaning your glass pay some attention to the window frames and sills, too. Look for mildew which can be removed using a solution of one part bleach to one part water. Window sills can be washed down with soapy water and buffed dry with a clean cloth. Source: NetMums
