James Gunn says Star-Lord’s father and the main villain have been cast in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-2

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 moving quickly towards production, having held a table read and rehearsals this past week, director James Gunn has been holding an impromptu Q&A with fans on Twitter.

The talking point is Gunn’s announcement that the roles of Star-Lord’s father and the main villain(s) have been cast:

As for the identity of Star-Lord’s father, Gunn continues to give very little away, save for the fact that it won’t be J’son of Spartax.

As yet, there’s been no word on which actors might have nabbed these roles, although Kurt Russell has confirmed that he’s had talks with Marvel following rumours that he was wanted for Star-Lord’s father. Hopefully we’ll get some official casting news soon.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on April 28th 2017 in the UK and on May 5th in the States, with director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebulda), Michael Rooker (Yondu) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin) alongside new addition Pom Klementieff (Oldboy).

Colin Trevorrow to shoot Star Wars: Episode IX on film… and in space?

trevorrow1

Although production is yet to get underway on Star Wars: Episode VIII – although the script is now out to the castJurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow is hard at work on development of the final chapter of Disney’s Sequel Trilogy.

Speaking at a press conference at Sundance, the director revealed that he prefers period movies shot on film instead of digital, adding that he plans to use film stock for Episode IX.

“There’s something in my brain that says, ‘well they didn’t have video cameras then,'” said Trevorrow. “[Star Wars] is a period film. It happened a long time ago.”

SEE ALSO: Colin Trevorrow promises satisfying reveal of Rey’s parentage in Star Wars: Episode IX

Meanwhile, Trevorrow also revealed that he’s been lobbying Disney and Lucasfilm to shoot certain plates for the film in space: “I asked the question, ‘Is it possible for us to shoot IMAX film plates in actual space for Star Wars?’ And I haven’t gotten an answer yet, but they’ve shot IMAX in space!”

Okay… maybe that’s taking location shooting just a little too far?

Star Wars: Episode IX is set for release on May 24th 2019, but don’t be surprised if it ends up getting pushed back to December.

Deadpool, X-Men, Bourne, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles among Super Bowl TV spots, but no Batman v Superman

With Super Bowl 50 set to take place next weekend, The Hollywood Reporter has posted details on which studios have stumped up the $4.6 million for a 30-second commercial during the big game.

deadpool-129049

According to their sources, Fox has two 30-second spots and will likely air a commercial for Deadpool, with either X-Men: Apocalypse or Independence Day: Resurgence taking the other. The studio also plans major “on-the-ground” events for all three, in addition to the Taron Egerton / Hugh Jackman sports comedy Eddie the Eagle.

Universal has one 60-second spot, which is likely to be used to promote Matt Damon’s return to the Bourne franchise in Bourne 5, although outside possibilities are The Huntsman Winter’s War and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 (2)

Paramount Pictures has confirmed that it will air a 30-second spot for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, while Disney is likely to advertise multiple titles, with its upcoming slate including The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Finding Dory and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Sadly for DC fans, Warner Bros. has opted against securing any ad time, so we’ll not be seeing a spot for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or Suicide Squad, although THR notes that it is possible a promotional partner could take the opportunity to plug the former.

Super Bowl 50 takes place on Sunday, February 7th.

Deadpool (1)

There’s less than a fortnight to go until the 2016 superhero season kicks off with the release of Deadpool, and this week has brought us the first clip from the movie as Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) pops the question to Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) [see here], along with a couple of ‘#TouchYourselfTonight’ viral promos in conjunction with the testicular cancer charity Ballboys [see here], some TV spots featuring the likes of Blind Al, Colossus, the X-Mansion and the Blackbird [see here], a clip of Deadpool, Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead battling Angel Dust [see here], a new international poster [see here], and a preview track from Junkie XL’s score [listen here]…

…In other Deadpool news, if you don’t think the R-rated cut is going to be hard enough for you, then you’ll be pleased to know that T.J. Miller has revealed a Director’s Cut is in the works which will be “even more raw” and “pretty heavy duty”, while Hugh Jackman responded to Deadpool’s recent comments calling X-Men Origins: Wolverine a career low

the-wolverine-wallpaper-2

…On the subject of Jackman, the star has been talking about his final outing as Logan in the upcoming Wolverine 3, stating that: “We have a script. A full script. To tell you, two days ago I got that the full finished—well, it’s not finished, but we’re getting super close—as you can see by the rate of my facial hair. That might give you a good clue that perhaps…yeah, it’s sooner rather than later. I don’t have a firm date yet. My thing and I’ve told you and I’ve told everyone, it’s my last one, for me I want it to be perfect, so the moment I know it’s perfect, bang, we’ll go…”

…Moving quickly on to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and this week brought us some new promotional art from Captain America: Civil War featuring a battle between ‘Team Cap’ and ‘Team Stark’ [see here], while Mark Millar said the movie adaptation of his blockbuster comic book arc “is much the same” as the source material [read his comments here], Don Cheadle said War Machine’s role is “pivotal” [read his comments here], and Louis D’Esposito released a behind-the-scenes image of Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) on the film’s set in what appears to be an Avengers quinjet [see here]…

And while we’re on the subject of The Hulk, Mark Ruffalo has spoken about his next outing as the Jade Giant, suggesting that Ragnarok and the two-part Avengers: Infinity War will serve as a kind of “Hulk solo movie” in terms of the character’s arc: “[A solo movie is not] on the horizon. And I don’t know if it will be. But we’ve worked a really interesting arc into Thor 3, Avengers 3 and 4 for Banner that I think will – when it’s all added up – will feel like a Hulk movie, a standalone movie.” You can read the rest of Ruffalo’s comments here, where he discusses Joss Whedon’s MCU departure and working with Infinity War helmers Anthony and Joe Russo and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi…

…Speaking of Waititi, the director has revealed that he plans to inject some of his brand of humour into the God of Thunder’s third solo outing: “I love that one moment in Avengers when Hulk grabs Loki and rag dolls him. It lends itself to great humor, do you read those comic books? They’re wacky. They’re crazy. I think that‘s exactly what they need, to keep changing it up. They’ve got their dark films, some are more serious, and I think it’s great that they’re mixing it up. I really want to inject my style of humor into this…”

…If you were worried about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Infinity War, fear not as Disney chairman Bob Iger has stated that the franchise will “go on forever”

Rumour: Star Wars Rebels season 3 to introduce major Expanded Universe character

Here’s some news that it bound to excite fans of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe, and in particular Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire trilogy…

Admiral-Thrawn

Making Star Wars is reporting that Lucasfilm is set to bring the fan favourite Grand Admiral Thrawn into official Star Wars canon, with the character reportedly set to appear in the third season of the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

“I have heard that in Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels we will be introduced to none other than the original blue guy himself, Grand Admiral Thrawn from Heir to the Empire,” reads the report. “From the sound of things, we’re going to see Thrawn as the tactical genius of capital starship warfare he was to Expanded Universe readers in the ’90s. However, this time he will be using his evil brand of genius against the the heroes of the starship Ghost.”

Given Thrawn’s popularity, it’s easy to be skeptical about the report, but it should be noted that Making Star Wars does have a very good record when it comes to Star Wars scoops.

Dominic Monaghan confirms that David Bowie auditioned for The Lord of the Rings

david bowie lord of the rings

It’s been rumoured for years that David Bowie had auditioned for a role in Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy trilogy The Lord of the Rings, and now it has been confirmed by Dominic Monaghan, who recalled seeing the legendary musician during his own audition for the role of Merry.

I was at the Hubbard’s, which is a pretty notorious casting agency office in London, doing an audition for Lord of the Rings, and when it ended I went over and talked to John Hubbard, who was running the audition, and he said, ‘Hey, it went really well. You should wait around for five or 10 mins. We’ll give you some feedback’,” Monaghan told The Huffington Post. “I thought, ‘Oh, OK, cool, and I sat in the reception office. As I was reading a magazine waiting, David Bowie came in and signed his little list and went in. I’m assuming he read for Gandalf. I can’t think of anything else he would’ve read for. He may have read for something else, but I’m a huge David Bowie fan, and I’m lucky enough to know his son. Just seeing him in person was pretty special to me.”

Rumours suggest that Bowie was in fact up for the role of Elrond, a part which ultimately went to Hugo Weaving, with Jackson previously revealing that he wanted to avoid casting famous stars as any of the iconic characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece.
