4 Tips for Choosing Curtain Fabric

With such a wide selection of curtain fabric in the market making a choice is a bit of a problem. Read on to learn about these 4 tips for your guidance.

Consider the Location – If the window is in a sunny location, does your curtain fabric or blind fabric need to be thick enough to reduce some of the light?  Would you prefer a lightweight material offering privacy but still allow the light to come through? Silk fabric is always a luxurious choice but will rot if exposed to sunlight…always interline and line silk curtains or silk blinds. Is the window draughty?  Heavy weight curtain fabrics or blind fabrics help reduce draughts.  Lighter weight materials may still be used but it would be advisable to line and interline them. Width and Weave – Fabric generally comes in two basic widths: 42 to 45 inches and 54 to 60 inches. Always check out the fabric bolt label or tag to determine its width. Home-decorating fabrics compared to fabrics used for clothing are in the wider width. You can also find some decorating fabrics that are 72 to 75 inches wide, 90 inches wide, and even some that measure 105 or 110 inches or wider. Plain, twill, satin, or damask weaves are common ones for decorator fabrics. Most printed cottons are plain or twill weave. Clashing, Contrasting, and Complementing – One of the most important things about choosing fabrics for curtains is the colour. There are a few colours that fit in any situation but many do not. Seeing a curtain that clashes with the colour of the walls may not be a nice view for most people. Fortunately, it is very hard to get different hues of colours to clash completely. Prints and Patterns – A rule of thumb: If you have patterned furniture or bedding (or a very elaborate rug), stick with solid curtains. If you have solid-color furniture or bedding, consider patterned curtains. For a subtle hit of style and energy, go for a small, neutral print, like dots or paisley, which reads like texture from afar.
