Singapore American School has been a part of my family for almost 30 years. When my parents moved our family to Singapore in 1983 and enrolled my siblings—Kimberly Rameker Hurst ('94) and Victor Rameker ('97)—and me in SAS, we did not expect to still be chanting, "Go Eagles!" nearly three decades later.

1956
On January 3, 1956, in a ceremony held at 15 Rochalie Drive, Singapore's Governor, His Excellency Sir Robert Black, officially declared the school open, pulling the draw string to unveil the dedication plaque which still hangs today at the school's Woodlands campus.

1965
In the late 1960s, the school administration prohibited students from riding motorcycles to school. The student council disagreed with the decision and, in 1969, appealed to the school board to lift the ban. It was rare that students could drive cars in Singapore, and motorcycle licenses could be more easily obtained at age 16.

The photograph is nondescript at first sight: slightly grainy, black and white. On the left, three students bend over a sheet of paper. Four girls sit around the other side of the table, calf-length uniform skirts grazing the floor. They appear to be engaged in a lively discussion. The year is 1958, and the manuscript lying on the table will soon become Singapore American School's very first yearbook, The Islander.

Lyngen
Ski-touring in late April: Daylight from 4 am till 10 pm, great powder or spring crust, wall-to-wall sunshine & all topped off with that breath-taking fjord & mountain view of the Lyngen Alps.
Together with Henryk from Out of Office I spent a fantastic week in the Lyngen Alps. Here’s a wee teaser so you can book your flight tickets and accommodation there for next spring, because it most certainly is a place you want to be. It all starts in Tromsø, where already the approach by plane is breath-taking. Then you go for a walk in the old town and pick up your Van from Take me Away Camping to head north-west to the Lyngen Alps and their surroundings.
You probably want to stop to take in the view once in a while.
When your bindings decides to break you go for a walk along the coast of Arnøya and make a stop in a lovely little cabin.
You take the ferry and enjoy the smell of the sea on deck.
And what’s wrong with sitting down in the sun and have a beer (after a day of skiing, obviously!)?
On the summit you snap a selfie with that big grin because the view is so amazing.
And while the tide is low you go for a walk along the beach.
Or you go skiing while the sun sets.
On blue-bird days the summits can be busy.
But there’s enough fjords so you can have one for yourself to enjoy the sunset.
So, book those tickets to Norway now, reserve your adventure van, and then check back in autumn to get the full low-down on our roadtrip ski-touring adventure.
