Vaccines and Brain Health E-Book

As someone who has sat on both sides of this very heated issue, I am excited to share with you the summary distillation of my perspective on vaccination and brain health.

The information presented in this ebook is based on years of research that has lead me to some inconvenient truths about a medical process we’ve come to know as “standard” in our conventional medical system.

My hope is that you use this as a guide to become familiar with the full breadth of available data so that you’re empowered to make our own decisions for you and your children.

Here’s the link to download it: Vaccines and Brain Health E-book

Things You Didn’t Know About Toilets

Vital Things You Didn’t Know About Toilets

No home is complete without a proper working toilet. The thought of relieving yourself out in nowhere can be literally scary. However, with a toilet in place; it is simple and very convenient. However, simple as they may look, there is much to know about toilets. You need to know how they work in order to get trouble free use and long life from them. Here are some vital facts about toilets you need to know.

The shape of a toilet plays an integral part in how your toilet looks. Indeed it determines the style of the bowl, seat, and also lid. Additionally the shape of your toilet will also determine the amount of installation space that your toilet requires. Here is what you need to know about toilet shapes.

Elongated Toilets

Elongated toilet bowl shape is not the most common yet. However it has many ad

elongated toiletvantages such as these.

  • Offers more comfort for adults.
  • Provided added room for seating.
  • Easy to install and operate always
  • Are unique and stylish for aesthetic
  • Gives you the best of both toilets.

Round Toilet Bowls

Unlike their elongated counter parts, the round toilet bowls are the most common designs due to these.

  • They take much lesser space/ room
  • They have fit many home designs
  • They are usually quite affordable
  • They are the easiest toilet to install

Elongated Toilet Bowls often extend from wall about 18 inches plus. On the contrary the Round Toilet Bowls take slightly below 17 inches making them super options for the very small space designs.

Oval Toilet Bowls

Also known as the Compacted Elongated Bowls, the oval toilet bowl saves 10% more space than the normal Elongated Toilet Bowls. They are likable for.

  • They have stylish designs
  • They are less demanding

Usually, round shapes require less space but are much more comfortable. Oval shapes on the other hand require more space to install, while elongated shapes are the master of class and design.

Toilet Seat Heights

The reason why a knowing the height of your toilet seat plays a key role is simple. It determines how comfortable your will be when using the toilet. When your legs dangle, they grow tired fast and a leaves you quite uncomfortable. Here is what you should know about the toilet seat height (Source: Toiletrated).

Toilet height is simply measured with a tape measure. The measurement is taken from the floor to the top of the seat. Heights vary, but more often they fall somewhere between 14 inches and 18 inches.

The standard toilets sit 14 inches. However the Chair Height Toilets or the Comfort Height Toilets – like Kohler refers to them will measure 15 inches or more.  Many of them 16″+ are ADA compliant.

Standard toilets are ideal for people with smaller stature or average heights. On the other hand, Chair Height Toilets are often two inches higher than standard-height toilets. They are easier to use as too.

Finally there are the Custom Height Toilets.  A good example of this type of toilet is the Wall-hung toilets that can often be positioned at a desired height from 15-3/8″ to 28-1/2″ to allow range of users.

Toilet Trapways

High Flow Toilets Sale

Another important consideration to go with is the toilet trapway. The main job of a toilet trapway is to carry waste from the toilet bowl to the main sewer line piping. A fully glazed toilet trapway will keep a smooth flow. Here are some toilet trapways that you can always go along with.

Exposed

The Exposed Trapway is traditionally designed. They can be easily seen from the side of any toilet that uses this design. They are characterized with standard caps to cover the exposed bolts that attach your toilet to the floor.

Concealed

These one features a smooth trapway surface. You can easily wipe the surface clean. Low-profile bolt caps are used instead of the traditionally exposed raised caps in order to provide a smooth, easy-to-clean surface on toilets (Visit: Toilet Rated).

Completely Hidden

fully skirted toiletThis is also known as the skirted trapway. It offers an easy-to-clean uniform base usually extending from the front to back of the toilet base. Usually, no bolts are exposed and many models require no drilling or caulk to install.

Toilet trapways are easy to manage as you can learn how to remove your toilet caps and again replace them with a more exquisite design. The process is usually simple and more specifically a DIY procedure.

Flush Systems

Apart from what we have seen the next thing in line to play an integral part on how your toilet operates is the flushing system. From gravity, dual flush, to double cyclone, or single flush the choice literally lies with you.

Even so the way your flushing lever is placed will be determined with what types of design you need. Today, toilets come with varying flush leavers and some of the most common ones that you might find are these.

  • Single Flush toilets with levers on left or right sides of the toilet.
  • Dual Flush toilets with the flushing lever for small and full flush.
  • Touchless Flush that uses a sensor to trigger the flush of your toilet.
  • Wall Mounted flush that works with wall hung toilets for convenience.

Benefits of Good Flushing Toilets

Looking at what having a great toilet entails, we can’t still walk away from the benefits of a good flushing toilet.

High Flow toilets offer an easy to use method to remove waste. They are very hygienic and will help to keep germs and bacteria away. Additionally, a high flow toilet is easy to take care of will last longer than a normal toilet. They also keep odor away and leave you with a fresh breath always. One last thing though, they are eco-friendly but can a little pricey but generally worth it.

Conclusion

To keep your toilet functioning at best, it is important that you learn some of the most Common Problems of Toilets and how to take care of them. This will help you to learn more about your toilet and also work with it in the most appropriate ways.

Summary

Toilets are a necessity in a home. They also help to boost the value of your home and also to keep your options for improvements open. Always choose a design that is best for you.

Dear Santa,

December is here! What better way to kick things of for the next 24 days than with a backpack? Alpinetrek.co.uk was so kind to provide one lucky hiker with the Berghaus Freeflow 30. At 30 l it packs a lot of gear for a day out in the hills, and the ultralight backpacker will even take the pack outdoor a weekend trip or longer. The back panel is increasing airflow and should be great for sweaty summer hikes, while the included rain cover keeps the contents dry when the weather turns. Stretchy side pockets carry a water bottle while the stretchy front pocket takes in a jacket or other gear. All in all a sweet pack which is great for hillwalking and dayhikes!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Disclaimer: Read The Tips & Rules. The prize is sponsored by Alpinetrek.co.uk and sent directly from them - it will only be shipped within Europe, though (possible import duty fees still need to be paid by the winner). Annual Day Zero HiF Advent Calendar Kick-off 2017

The “Annual Day Zero HiF Advent Calendar Kick-off 2017” is a go!

HiFAdventCalendar Kickoff Logos

Dear Santa,

really, 12 months passed and we’re talking again? How are you? Did your pack get lighter this year? How’s the snow up North, and are the reindeers alright? I did miss our conversations, and am looking forward to catch up with you over the next 24 days. But I also need to tell you that this is likely the last time we’ll be having our chats - rumor has it that this is the final #HiFAdventCalendar - that could be just a rumor, or then it’s a fact - I guess we’ll have to wait till November 2018 to find out. Anyway.

The 2017 Hiking in Finland Advent Calendar looks like it will be the best yet again, with great prizes that will make quite a few people happy. Also, Hiking in Finland is planting one tree for each door that goes open, so once the 24th of December comes around there will be 25 trees planted, already a wee forest! That’s not just great for the environment, but also for future generations of outdoor enthusiasts! Well, lets have a look at the prizes this year, shall we?

The ADZHiFACKO Door has some sweet kit from GSI with the Halulite Microdualist Complete Set and the Ultralight Java Drip. The Halulite Microdualist is an excellent choice to boil water and cook food when outdoors, and best of all: It’s made for two people and packs up in itself. But even when outdoors on my own the Halulite is a solid choice and with the Ultralight Java Drip a good cup of real coffee is never far away. And who can resist good coffee - especially outdoors?!

The Kupilka 37 goes very well with the stove and coffee dripper, and the 370 ml volume of this new, larger Kuksa is a real benefit: Large cups of coffee in the morning, warm soups in the afternoon, refreshingly cold cups of water while hiking and hot chocolate in the evening can be consumed from it in style.

The eVent Rain Mitts from Mountain Laurel Design on the other hand are a good weather charm - carry these 30 g mitts and it’s bound not to rain! I can not imagine a better way to influence the weather, and if one’s luck runs out then one can always wear them to keep the hands dry!

The Down Socks from GooseFeet Gear on the other hand are a sure guarantor to toasty toes and feet. They also pack down next to nothing, are ultralight and nowadays come in a variety of colours from Black to Red, Pink and Blue. The Mitts and Socks even pack so small, you could stuff them into your Kuksa!

As you see Dear Santa, this kick-off Door is already filled to the brim with sweet kit - and all potential winners need to do is enter via the Rafflecopter Widget below!

Advent Calendar 2017 - the Rules

Some Rules can be broken, but the #HiFAdventCalendar Rules can not.

HiF Advent Calendar Logo

Welcome to the seventh and final Hiking in Finland Advent Calendar! Like in the years before, a good set of rules makes running the Advent Calendar a lot easier for all of us. Read them carefully and everything will be clear, and for some added benefit check out the tips at the end!

This years calendar will run 25 days (= 25 Doors), and behind each door you will find a fine piece of equipment which should make your next outdoor adventure fun and ultralight. Some information on the prizes:

  • All prizes are sent directly from the company providing them (which can mean that you might need to pay import duties when it comes from abroad!).
  • Sometimes it is possible that you can choose size, colour and other variables. Where this is the case, it will be mentioned in the text of the Door.
  • This means garments can be either female or male, backpacks can be different torso sizes and meals can be vegetarian or with meat.

The Rules

To win something you should check in each day here and enter the raffle. There are a couple of points to keep in mind:

  1. You only can win once. If you don’t win on one day, you can try your luck the next day - you got 25 chances!

  2. I am using a paid-for version of Rafflecopter for the Give-Aways. With Rafflecopter you can get multiple entries by following someone on Instagram, Twitter, visit a page on Facebook, follow a Pinterest page or susbscribe to a Mailing List. This increases your chances to win, but is not mandatory.

  3. The Rafflecopter Widget is integrated with Random.org and it choses the winner.

  4. If you are the lucky winner I contact you via the provided Email address and you have 24 hours to reply. If I don’t hear from you, I imagine you don’t want the item and will let Random.org chose a new winner.

  5. Posts go online around midnight and the raffles close at midnight - Finnish time. Rafflecopter then will show the name of the winner after I pushed that button, this keeps posts to a minimum.

  6. It is open to everyone. As in from Amsterdam to Zanzibar, from Canada to South Africa, prices are send everywhere (unless noted otherwise).

  7. Possible Import Duty taxes and fees are paid by the winner. If you’re not willing to pay these, don’t compete.

  8. You can’t bribe me or anyone involved to win. You use the item(s) on your own responsibility. Use common sense.

Impressions from Koli. Read http://ift.tt/1X3CNLv =)

Tips

  1. You can participate via the Rafflecopter widget by registering with your Email or your Facebook accoount. Please make sure for either option that it’s an Email address you regularly check, so when I contact you you get the email.

  2. There is usually one mandatory option to answer to participate. This can be something fun or a question about the price in question. You should be easily able to answer the question by reading the text or visiting the manufacturer website.

  3. You can get additional entries which improve your chances of winning. This could be visiting a Facebook page or following someone on Youtube, Twitter, Instagram and the like. It’s a good thing to do, and also allows you stay up-to-date with news about the HiF Advent Calendar and the company sponsoring the prize.

  4. If you think your friends and fans would like to participate - spread the word! Use the #HiFAdventCalendar hashtag on Instagram, Twitter & Facebook when you spread the word =)

  5. Some prizes could incur you import duties. You will need to pay these and there’s no way around them, so please don’t ask me or the sponsor for a way to avoid them. If you’re not willing to pay them, please don’t enter for that price.

That’s it. The Advent Calendar starts today, the 29th of November. Subscribe to the RSS feed, Facebook, Google+ or Twitter to get an update every time a new door opens.

Disclaimer: All gear is sponsored. Sponsors pay a fee to participate. Part of the income is donated to plant trees. I try to not spend all time in front of a screen so relax if a post goes up a tad late or I don’t reply an email asap.

How to Deal With Leaky Windows

Window leaks can make it more difficult for the heater to warm up your home. This may result in an increase in your energy bill. Avoid this by doing the following tips as soon as possible:

Recaulk

  1. Choose a dry day with moderate temperatures to recaulk leaking vinyl and metal windows with waterproof caulk. Pull off all peeling and loose caulk, and wash the window with a detergent solution to remove grease and oil that can prevent the caulk from adhering.
  2. Put the tube of caulk into a caulking gun, cut the tip at a 45-degree angle with a utility knife, and puncture the seal with a 16d nail.
  3. Lay a continuous bead with no voids or bubbles in the joint between the window and the frame along one side of the window. Tool the bead by running your finger along it, then caulk the other three sides of the window in the same way. Let the caulk cure overnight before you paint it. Source: SFGate

Ask a pro
If your windows are leaking water through the frames or sills, rain is probably getting into the house either because the exterior seals have worn away or because there are problems with the roof, chimney, spaces between siding panels, or possibly even a backed-up gutter.

A roofing contractor can inspect your roof and chimney for holes, missing shingles, poor flashing, or backed-up gutters. Sometimes you can solve the problem by replacing the shingles, patching the roof, and cleaning out the gutters. You may need to replace the flashing around the roof seams and the chimney. As an extra precaution, caulk all the way around the windows outside to make sure they’re sealed against rain. Source: Modernize

Use the warranty
Ever wondered if holding onto warranties makes sense? This is why you do it. And this is why, upon purchasing a home, you should ask the seller to hand over warranty information about the windows.

Premature window seal failure means a defective product. Source: TheSpruce

One of the best ways to keep your electric bill low despite the cold winter weather is to use energy-efficient window treatments. If you don’t have some yet, call us today!

4 Ways to Avoid Frozen Pipes

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

It’s expensive to repair broken pipes—damage that commonly occurs during winter due to low temperatures. To ensure that you get to enjoy a hot bath any time of the day without worrying about the bathroom pipes, read the following tips:

Drain the lines
Shut off the valves supplying your outside water lines. Individual supply lines running to the outside (hose bibs for example) will usually have a shut off valve on the inside of your home, close to where the supply goes outside. Drain the outside lines by opening the tap and then leave it in the open position. As long as it remains open, even a small amount of leftover water in the line can freeze and expand without causing any damage. Source: DoItYourself

Adjust the thermostat
Set the home or structure’s thermostat to at least 55 °F (13 °C). This will keep the temperature well above the freezing point of water. It will also allow enough warm air to circulate to the attic and behind walls, where pipes are often located. Source: WikiHow

Install a heating cable
Any outdoor pipes, such as water lines that run in a crawlspace under a house, are susceptible to freezing. Insutation, whether in the walls or around the pipes themselves, can help keep out the elements. But even that might not be enough, especially if you live in a cold climate.

To be sure your pipes won’t freeze, you can install electrical heating cable around the crawlspace pipes. The cable’s temperature automatically adjusts to the appropriate heat output as ambient temperatures change. Source: PopularMechanics

Make sure there are no air leaks
Seal leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located. Look for air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents and pipes, and use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out. With severe cold, even a tiny opening can let in enough cold air to cause a pipe to freeze. Source: Patch

A sauna and a steam shower can make your winter days and nights so much better. Call us today!

Parsnip Cake with Cream Cheese Glaze

Parsnip Cake with Cream Cheese Glaze

**Thanks to Schwartz for sponsoring this post!**

I’m a big fan of using vegetables in dessert. I mean, I now eye roll when people do the whole ‘well it’s got vegetables in it so I can eat it for breakfast right!? ha ha ha’. Mate, if you want to eat cake for breakfast, you do you. Don’t need to justify it!! I’m all on board the cake train. What I DO like about the vegetable addition is that a) it sometimes can bring a different aspect of flavour or colour to the cake, making it more interesting to eat b) its a GREAT way to use up a hell of a lot of veg at once e.g. if you have a bag of carrots starting to look a biiiit sad, turn em into cake instead of chucking them! and c) they often also bring moisture to recipes which can make things all fluffy and soft – it’s also why usually they’re not used in cookies cos who on earth wants a fluffy cookie?

You may think a parsnip cake sounds like a strange idea, but if you think about carrot or courgette cake, there’s not much difference. Parsnips are another slightly sweet vegetable with a mild flavour – in fact we add in hella spices to make sure the cake is tasty. I was given a Schwartz spice advent calendar to create this recipe with so I went with loadsa cinnamon, some nutmeg, allspice and ground ginger. A classic combo of fragrant, sweet spices to match the sweet earthiness of the parsnip.

As I try to avoid making layer cakes whenever possible, I kept things simple by using a bundt tin instead. With a bundt I also usually feel like a standard buttercream isn’t gonna work so a cream cheese glaze is poured on top instead (which incidentally is also easier than making buttercream, hooray!). My decoration choice of pumpkin seeds and silvery sugar balls is totally optional (or you can switch it up by using chopped pecans and festive sprinkles!). I’m just warning you now, it’s incredibly addictive and much simpler to assemble than layer cake – say hello to my new fave festive cake!!!

Parsnip Cake with Cream Cheese Glaze

Parsnip Cake with Cream Cheese Glaze

serves 10-12

  • 150 g (3/4 cup) granulated sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 160 ml (2/3 cup) vegetable oil (or any neutral oil)
  • 80 ml (1/3 cup) plain yogurt
  • 2 tsp Schwartz ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Schwartz ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp Schwartz nutmeg (grated)
  • ¼ tsp Schwartz ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 300 g (3 cups) coarsely grated parsnip
  • 80 g (1/2 cup) raisins
  • 240 g (2 cups) wholemeal flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

for the glaze:

  • 100 g (3.5oz) full-fat cream cheese
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 150-200 g (1 to 1 1/2 cups) icing sugar (powdered sugar)
  • water
  • pumpkin seeds (silver sprinkles (optional))

To make the cake

  1. Preheat the oven to 180oC (350oF). Grease a large bundt pan very well with butter or oil.

  2. In a large bowl, stir together the sugar, eggs and oil until smooth. Stir in the yogurt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, orange zest and salt. Fold in the grated parsnips and raisins then add the flour, baking powder, baking soda to the bowl. Mix together until just combined.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared bundt pan then bake for 40-50 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Turn the cake out onto a cooling rack then leave to cool completely before frosting.

To make the glaze:

  1. Mix the cream cheese, icing sugar (start with the lesser amount) and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth. Add water a teaspoon at a time to get a thinner consistency – you want it to be pourable but not super thin. If it’s too thin, add some more icing sugar to make it thicker.

Assemble:

  1. Pour the glaze over the cooled bundt cake. Let it drip down the edges. Once the glaze has stopped dripping but before it has completely set, sprinkle with the pumpkin seeds and silver sprinkles.

Arno Matis Architecture believes that contemporary forces of globalization and fragmented specialization demand new responses to the shaping of human environments. AMA’s interest in design integration engages projects in the typically unexplored hybrid space between architecture, urban planning, and landscape; working within the disciplines and blurring the lines between them. Each AMA project is an archetype of the unique characteristics of site, its social, cultural, economic and ecological context, and the unique skills and personalities of its stakeholders. AMA strives for responsive and balanced design solutions beyond the utopian that serve the present and point to an unimaginably exciting future.
