4 Tips to Prepare Your Bathroom for Winter Months

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Winter is on the horizon. If you haven’t prepared your bathrooms for cold weather, now is the time. Here are some tips to help you prepare your bathroom for the upcoming winter months, including: checking windows and pipes, adding some heating, setting the mood & winterizing your toilet.

Below are 4 tips to prepare your bathroom for the winter months:

Check Windows and Pipes

Bathrooms can be draughty places, so it’s a good idea to check your windows for cracks and reseal any worn silicone. It might also be a good idea to check your pipes for cracks and leaks, as well as ensuring all your pipework is properly insulated. By ensuring there are no problems in your bathroom to begin with, you can avoid small problems getting bigger down the track, which can often happen in winter with frozen pipes causing expensive issues. Source: BathroomCity

Add Some Heating
Is there anything more unpleasant than having to make a trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night, only to discover that the entire room is freezing cold?  You can avoid this unpleasant scenario – to a point, anyway – by adding a heating element to your bathroom during the winter months. If your bathroom doesn’t already have its own heat source, add a space heater or other portable heating device that can be switched on to heat up at least part of the room as quickly as possible. Source: AmericanBathInd

Set the mood
Speaking of simple swaps, trading out bathroom accessories to fit the season is a great way to change the look of the bath. Display cozy, plush robes to keep bathers warm when stepping out of the shower and make guests feel right at home. Consider installing robe hooks close to the shower door for easy access. For added flair, incorporate accessories such as towels in a festive pattern, splashes of gold in soap dishes, or hints of bronze in candle holders and picture frames. Source: WaynecoJournalBanner

Winterize Your Toilet
You may be unaware that you can winterize your toilet and prevent this fixture from freezing during cold weather. In fact winterizing the toilet is quite easy and does not take much time at all to complete. This process involves using plumber’s antifreeze, which you can buy at most home improvement or hardware stores.
Before you pour in the antifreeze, you should first empty the water out of the back tank. Once the water is drained, you can then pour in the antifreeze and then flush it into the bowl and drainage system. After you flush, you should then pour a half cup of plumber’s antifreeze into each sink, shower, and tub in your house. This step winterizes the entire drainage system in your bathroom. 3 Winter Window Treatments

When staged according to the season, window treatments can make a huge difference in how someone feels about a space. In this short post we’ll cover 3 window treatments that are well suited to the winter season.

Layered Curtains or Insulated Curtains
Use heavy fabrics or layered curtains over the windows to keep out drafts. Or, purchase insulated curtains with built-in thermal backing. Source: ApartmentTherapy

Block Out Blinds
They’re reasonably straightforward to fit as long as you are absolutely pinpoint accurate with the measurement for the vertical runners, as they must fit the window frame exactly. I managed with only a few expletives. They’re perfect at night as they block out light as well as draughts, but need to be opened during the day to let the winter sun in, so they are not effective during the hours of precious winter daylight. Source: TeleGraph

Shutters
Plantation Shutters can be considered the best value winter window treatments for their aesthetic appeal as well as their ability to increase the selling price on your home (in addition to keeping you warm!)
Plantation Shutters, especially those constructed of wood, have insulating elements and when closed the solid, durable structure of the slats will keep the cold air out of your windows during the winter and will shade your home from the scorching sun during the summer.
For those looking for a cheap, fast solution for your windows, Plantation Shutters are probably not the best choice. However, if you are looking to spice up the room with some elegance and desire a long-term solution that will add value to your home- then this is the option for you! Standing Rock: Stand for the Feminine

standing-rockThe universe is knocking. Many of us are feeling that it is time. That something is happening, right now. That we are being asked to awaken out of our slumber, turn off our distractions, and feel something.

Feeling is the beginning of possibility.

Feeling with consciousness is the feminine principle.

The pain and suffering that activists have been grappling with for decades, is now exposed for all to see, thanks to technology and social media. While endless debates may unfold over differing opinions on motivations, justifications, and even scientific elements of a given controversy, sometimes all it takes is one experience of humanization.

One video of women whose lives have been changed by the Gardasil vaccine.

One of people who will always wonder why they took their doctor’s advice to take a benzodiazepine.

One of a boy who lost his life to stimulant drugs.

One of a drone strike on innocent civilians.

One of animals whose lives are washed over with spilled oil.

And now, how does this one feel?

It hurts, doesn’t it?

With the painful design of today’s accelerated unfoldment, we are left cringing at the seeming irony of a commercialized celebration of our country’s fictionalized origins (Happy Thanksgiving!) while militarized police and private sector security maim and even threaten the lives of peaceful protestors activated in defense of indigenous people. While our own president engages in magician-like tactics of distraction to mask his neglect of this most exemplary exposure of federal and corporate collusion against the people, the land, and the very Constitution. Those in the health freedom realm have noted a history on the part of the current administration of distracting the populace with politically correct gestures of social liberalism at peak times of distraction. In this way, the powers colluding with the unbalanced masculine continue to curry favor with progressive-minded people who may choose to remain blind to nefarious agendas beneath the surface.

Of all of my advocacies, many of which are polarizing and potentially divisive, it strikes me that mounting peaceful forces in rejection of corporate interests makes sense to most of us, perhaps without meaningful exception. We are watching a corporation break the law, and we are watching the state of North Dakota mobilize militarized police forces to suppress those peaceful asking for the law to be followed, let alone for the original people of this country to be honored. Perhaps this crisis is the most illuminating example of how our earth, and a people who have always regarded it as sacred, can no longer be desecrated in the name of technological fixes to our ever ballooning “problems” of modern life.

It’s. Time. To. Stop.

We can no longer continue to apply more and more of our reckless methodologies to the problems created by these methodologies. It simply isn’t working. In fact, nothing seems to be working anymore – our approach to chronic disease, our educational system, our economic system, our approach to energy and commercial infrastructure, even marriage as an institution. It’s all falling apart and being exposed for the house of cards that it has been. The endless fixes as we are promised the final sweeping cure to the problem, every time.

What is being violated in all of these instances, is the feminine principle. The greater sense of connectedness to a whole that includes us all. A whole that does not respond to violence, attacks, or domination agendas – whether it’s international relations or response to an infection – what harms the other harms us.

Native American culture has upheld this wisdom, in many matrilineal tribes that have deferred to a council of women for guidance and a connection to a more balanced sensibility in times of duress.

The power of a woman, an embodied woman, is unstoppable. This is why it is time now, for women to rise, and for the men that see this, to come into alignment with this energy of wellness, nurturing, giving and maintaining life.

As a people without elders, without ritual, without community, we must look to a community that has these sacred resources in the modern day, to help us know when it is time to rise up.

Remember, though, that, as Nicholas Gonzalez told me, these are the final birth pangs of a new story being born. There is always protest at that moment of transition. Women in labor notoriously want to die and give up just as that baby is crowning. Those deeply invested in the Story of Separation will be doing everything they can to hold on, and with that, because of that, will rise the New.

Support the truth and stand for the feminine for us all:

Moms Across America

ACLU

And continue to consciously care for your own body, mind, and spirit in service of the radiant healing only you can provide this planet.

5 Tips to Keep your Bathroom Warm This Winter

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

It’s easy to bundle up to keep yourself warm when it’s winter cold. But when it’s time to step into the bathroom, just the thought of it already gives you chills. Here are 5 things to do so you can make your bathroom experience warm and cozy despite the cold weather:

Efficiency Check
If your bathroom feels chillier than the rest of the house, the windows may be the culprit. Perform a quick test to see if your windows are letting in drafts by holding up a piece of tissue around the perimeter—if it moves, you have an air leak. Caulk around the window to prevent future air flow. Source: BobVila

Consider a Home Sauna
Historically much more common in countries like Sweden, saunas are becoming more popular in the States. Source: Houzz

Buy a Rug
Make sure it’s a rug made specifically for bathrooms, but not a plastic bathmat. Try to get a soft one, so it’s comfortable to walk on. Make sure it’s absorbent. Source: WikiHow

Install a Steam Shower
When your muscles ache or you’ve just braved a day filled with snow and slush, wouldn’t you love to treat yourself to an herb-scented steam bath? It’s possible to bring this health club experience home by transforming an ordinary shower stall into a rejuvenating steam shower. You can buy a steam-generating system for about $2,500, plus the cost of re-tiling and installing a steam-proof shower enclosure. There’s plumbing and electrical work involved, so you’ll need to hire pros for this job. Once installed, you’ll find your steam shower to be a relatively frugal energy consumer: A 20-minute steam bath requires about 2 gallons of water — a fraction of the 50 gallons used by a water-saving showerhead in the same time frame. Source: Bathrooms.About

Warm up your Towels
Heated towel racks are a quick and easy solution to warm things up. Just imagine stepping out of the shower to a nice warm towel. You can either install the rails, or have a freestanding rack, making this approach the simplest and most practical step towards a warmer bathroom. Source: Lifestyle

5 Winter-Proofing Tips for Your Windows

The winter chill need not be a reason for an astronomical increase in your heating bill. Let your windows help insulate your home with the following tips:

Honeycomb Cellular Shades
Honeycomb cellular shades help to keep cold air and drafts out, not just from the window, but from around the window frame too.  It’s important to lower them at night when the temperatures are colder, and then open them during the day to use the energy of the sun to warm up the house. Source: GreenOptimistic

Weather Stripping
Use weather stripping to cover any gaps or spaces in parts of the windows that are moveable. First, clean the window parts thoroughly where stripping will be applied; then cut the weather stripping to size, peel the covering off the sticky side and apply where needed with enough pressure to ensure a good seal. Source: Overstock

Layered Window Treatments
To dress your windows really warmly, bundle them up in insulating shades (or cellular shades) with curtains hung on top. This elegant look makes any room feel more finished and will keep your house warmer. Source: Houzz

Storm Windows and Doors
If you have older windows and doors, adding storm windows and doors can help considerably. Window insulation film is another option to provide a layer of protection. “It really insulates the window,” Sassano says. Source: Money.USNews

Use Dark, Thick Curtains at Night
Another good way to winter proof your apartment is to use dark, thick curtains over your windows at night. During the day, if it’s sunny, you can draw your blinds back (so long as your windows are covered with film) and you may be able to receive some heating benefit from the sun. However, remember that nighttime is longer in the winter and that there may be cloudy days. When it’s not sunny out, you should cover the windows with dark, thick curtains, which can help trap heat. Creamy Cauliflower, Mushroom & Kale Pasta Bake {vegan option}

Creamy Cauli Mushroom and Kale Pasta Bake

This post was created in partnership with Barilla Pasta – they’ve got an amazing competition on at the moment where you can win £1,000 of British Airways vouchers to use towards a weekend trip to Italy (that would be my dream come true!) – to enter you just have to post a pic of a pasta dish either on the comments of this post on Barilla UK’s facebook page OR on instagram using the hashtags #OutsideTheBox and #BarillaUK. Just think of all the pizza and gnocchi you could be eating *weeps tears of joy*.

Now onto the recipe! If you are as much of a pasta bake fan as I am, you’ll love this post.

Every year I start to feel a bit blue once winter arrives. All that luscious summer produce is gone and with it, the sunlight has withered away. I’m stuck wondering why the heck we still have to put the clocks back and hour in the winter? It just means the meagre afternoon sunlight becomes even more fleeting. I miss fresh tomatoes, peaches and big bunches of fresh basil 🙁

Creamy Cauli Mushroom and Kale Pasta Bake

The upside is the comfort food that always seems appropriate to cosy up with. Miso soup, pie and big bowls of porridge are all top favourites. Anything baked ticks two boxes because a) it’s probably going to involve hot carbs and b) If I close the kitchen door whilst I’m cooking, the whole room gets warmed up and I don’t need to wear a jumper for once!

Creamy Cauli Mushroom and Kale Pasta Bake

It won’t come as a surprise that pasta bake is a definite winter winner for me. You can pack in loads of veggies so you feel relatively healthy – I even snuck cauliflower purée into the sauce because I’m all about that vegetable/fibre life plus it makes it even creamier! I used Barilla’s wholemeal penne pasta and I have to say, it’s my favourite wholemeal pasta I’ve ever tried as it still has a perfect texture (despite the bran) and a light, nutty flavour. As eating dairy-heavy foods can give me stomach cramps, I prefer this cheese-light sauce to something like classic mac and cheese. There’s just a sprinkling of parmesan on top which packs in the umami tang without needing half a block of Cheddar. Garlicky mushrooms and hella fresh thyme bring the flavour in and a scattering of breadcrumbs on top give it that irresistible crispy topping. It’s a perfect dish to shared with friends on a weeknight or Sunday evening when you’re in need of some proper, hearty food.

Creamy Cauliflower, Mushroom & Kale Pasta Bake {vegan option}

Ingredients
  • 1 small head cauliflower, outer leaves removed, cut into medium florets
  • 1 small potato (~100g), sliced 3mm thick
  • salt
  • 250g wholemeal penne pasta (I used Barilla)
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp plain flour
  • 200ml semi-skimmed milk or unsweetened non-dairy milk (see notes)
  • 200ml vegetable stock
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • black pepper
  • 250g chestnut mushrooms, sliced
  • 5 cloves garlic, crushed or finely chopped
  • 6 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves picked & stems discarded
  • 100g curly kale, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • Topping:
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs (see notes)
  • 30g Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 4 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves picked & stems discarded
  • a drizzle of olive oil
Instructions
  1. Bring a medium pot of salted water to the boil. Add the cauliflower and potato. Bring back up to the boil over a high heat then turn the heat down to simmer – leave to cook for 8 minutes until the cauliflower and potato are soft. Use a slotted spoon to remove the cauliflower and potato from the water to a large jug or bowl – set aside for later and keep the pot of water on the stove.
  2. Add the pasta to the pot of water and bring back up to the boil (add more water to the pot if needed to cover the pasta). Once boiling, turn the heat down to simmer and leave the pasta to cook for 5 minutes until only just barely cooked on the outside with an uncooked centre. Drain the pasta and rinse it under cold water in a colander. Set aside in the colander for later. Return the pot to the stove.
  3. Add 2 tbsp of olive oil to the pot along with the flour. Stir over a medium heat until smooth and cook for 1 minute. Combine the milk and stock together in a jug – gradually mix this liquid into the flour-oil paste in the pot, stirring in between additions until smooth. Once all the liquid has been added, bring the mixture to a simmer over a medium-low heat and let it cook for 2 minutes – it won’t be very thick right now but don’t worry!
  4. Pour the hot contents of the pot and the tablespoon of mustard into the jug/bowl containing the cauliflower and potato. Blend using a hand blender until completely smooth and thick. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Set the sauce aside.
  5. Preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F).
  6. In a medium frying pan, heat the remaining 1 tbsp of olive oil over a medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms and let them cook, stirring occasionally until they’ve shrunk down and are releasing liquid (about 5 minutes). Add the garlic, thyme and a pinch of salt to the frying pan, turn the heat down to low and cook for 1 minute. Add the kale to the frying pan and cover with a lid or large plate. Leave to steam for 5-7 minutes until the kale has wilted down. Remove the lid and take off the heat.
  7. In a medium casserole dish or roasting tin, mix the pasta, mushrooms, kale and sauce. Mix the topping ingredients (except the olive oil) in a small bowl and sprinkle over the pasta. Drizzle with some olive oil, slide the dish into the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes until the topping is slightly browned. Divide between bowls and serve hot.
Notes
- To make this vegan: omit the parmesan from the topping and just season with some flaky salt and nutritional yeast instead. Use unsweetened, non-dairy milk in the sauce.
- To make breadcrumbs: take one slice of bread and rub it on the coarse side of a grated to shred it into coarse breadcrumbs.

Advent Calendar 2016 - The Rules

We need rules to play by, and here they are.

HiF Advent Calendar Logo

Welcome again to a new Hiking in Finland Advent Calendar! Like in the years before, a good set of rules makes running the Advent Calendar a lot easier for everyone involved. Read them carefully and everything hopefully will be clear, and for some added benefit check out the tips at the end!

This years calendar will run 25 days (= 25 Doors), and behind each door you will find a fine piece of brand-new gear which should make your next outdoor adventure fun and ultralight. Some information on the prizes:

  • All prizes are sent directly from the company providing them (which can mean that you might need to pay import duties when it comes from abroad!).
  • Sometimes it is possible that you can choose size, colour and other variables. Where this is the case, it will be mentioned in the text of the Door.
  • This means garments can be either female or male, backpacks can be different torso sizes and meals can be vegetarian or with meat.

The Rules

To win something you should check in each day here and enter the raffle. There are a couple of points to keep in mind:

  1. You only can win once. If you don’t win one day, you should try your luck the next day - you got 25 chances!

  2. I am using a paid-for version of Rafflecopter for the Give-Aways. With Rafflecopter you can get multiple entries by following someone on Instagram, Twitter, visit a page on Facebook, follow a Pinterest page or susbscribe to a Mailing List. This increases your chances to win, but is not mandatory.

Staying Safe when Ski-touring in the Backcountry

Ski-touring without certain items just isn’t smart. So you’re not going out into the mountains without the right kit, here’s a look at what you should have along when you skin up the next mountain to enjoy some sweet pow!

Will and Anselm discussing our run

No one likes to think about avalanches when he goes out into the backcountry, but it is a danger that is always present when we go off-piste, searching for deep powder fields and steep runs. As I set out ski-touring last winter my first thoughts went straight to safety - maybe because as a dad of two kids coming home healthy and in one piece is very important to me. Even if you’re not a mom or dad I imagine you too want to come safely home from a ski-touring trip, and hence the topic of safety is something we need to talk about.

But before I delve into the gear which you should wear and carry the most important part is to apply ones common sense, aka the grey squishy bit between your ears. We all probably feel like we have to little time out in the mountains, so when the avalanche danger is high while we have that short ski vacation we might be tempted to forgo the warnings and still go up the mountain. Well, just don’t - or go somewhere where it is safe.

Avalanche safety really starts before you start out on the hills, so make sure check avalanche bulletin of your region and talk with local(s) (mountain guides & ski teachers, for example). That you should know how to use your gear - from beacon to probe & proper shovelling - goes without saying really, and if you’re new to the game do yourself a favour and visit a avalanche course or two before you head out into the hills. Then when the warning is low and the slopes are calling, it is safe to go and find that deep pow stash!

My Avalanche safety kit

So what’s the safety gear I wear & carry when I head out to the mountains? Around my body I wear the PIEPS DSP Pro Ice Avalanche Beacon. This beacon packs a lot of functions - the most important ones for me are the large 60 m search radius, because this would allow me in case of a burial to detect a mate already from further away; and the three antennas allow for a precise localization of the signal, minimizing the time you spent probing the snow. The Mark function lets me mark mates in case of multiple burials, and as it can be very bright & white in the mountains it is very useful that the display is easy to read in any light & shows the direction plus distance of the burial clearly.

The DSP Pro Ice is also dead easy to use and the 400 hour battery life means I can go out a season long and don’t need to switch batteries. It performs a self-check at start-up and lets you know when it is OK, has 5 years of warranty and also come with the carry system you see in the photo. There’s a lot of tech in this beacon but the size and weight are still pretty good. However, if I would be in the market again I’d be tempted to pick up the PIEPS Micro Beacon because not only is it cheaper than the DSP Pro Ice, it is also lighter and smaller! But at 198 g the PIEPS DSP Pro Ice isn’t really too heavy, and I rarely realize I am wearing it when I skin up or ski down a mountain. I switch it on when I start my ascent, and switch it off when back down. All in all I am very happy with this beacon and can recommend it if you’re looking for the best beacon with the most features on the market.

PIEPS DSP Pro Ice

I’m using a G3 SpadeTECH Shovel and a G3 240 Speed TECH Probe because I got them for free when I visited Arc’teryx in Vancouver last year. They are light and compact, deploy fast when needed and the shovel is easy to use, also with thick gloves on. The 240 cm probe is on the shorter side, but thus far (in practices) I have never needed a longer probe.

G3 SpadeTECH Shovel G3 240 Speed TECH Probe Details

I’m always carrying a small FA Kit - sometimes the ORTOVOX First Aid Light but usually just a super-small MYOG kit (couple of Compeeds, an emergency bivy/ blanket and a few pain killers). These commercial kits are alright but I find the are over-specced and one doesn’t need that much gear when outside, and they’re also pretty big - when I’m out ski-touring I only have a 25l pack and space comes at a premium. If you have a bigger pack you might not have this problem & can carry a large FA kit, but if you’re experienced & know what you might need take a smaller & lighter kit, suitable to your needs.

Ortovox First Aid Light Kit

All of that I carry in my Black Diamond Dawn Patrol 25 which also has the extra Avalung Breathing System. The Dawn Patrol 25 pack has a front avy tool pocket which means I can access my shovel and probe super-fast when needed and I don’t need to first dig through my pack to find shovel & probe, which is very important in an emergency situation. I actually was able to fit crampons, extra clothes, a thermos and water as well as skins and snacks into this pack when I was doing the Graubünden Haute-Route!

That’s it! With this gear I can tour safely in the mountains, know I can help a friend if he would get buried and have a fair chance at also surviving an avalanche. But remember: The most important bit is to not go into avalanche terrain, know your limits and practice your skills so that you can come home again! Stay safe in the mountains and enjoy the summits & powder!

Albert ripping it!

The Healing Mindset: Two Surprising Tips to Heal Your Body with Your Mind

the-healing-mindsetI remember once feeling like I was offering my patients a warm, nurturing hug when I would give them a diagnosis, or confirm it, after a consultation. “It’s the nature of Bipolar Disorder,” I would say “…it’s just part of your lineage, a brain chemistry condition, that thankfully, we can manage if you stick with your medication.”

I never, of course, suspected, that this diagnosis would ultimately be cold comfort, and perhaps even something like a number on a prisoner’s jumpsuit.

A diagnosis is just that. It is a label that reduces a human experience to an impersonal pattern. A pattern that your doctor is trained to match up with a prescription or medical intervention. This pattern recognition makes no room for you – your story, your experience, the meaning of your symptoms.

Unfortunately, medical training has neglected to heed the advice of our forefathers like William Osler who said: “It is more important to find out what patient has the disease than what disease the patient has.”

Hospital-based doctors are notorious for referencing their patients by their diagnosis – the COPD exacerbation in room 401c – as if they are stick figures with signs hanging around their necks.

If you are simply a broken down machine that needs a tune up, then obviously, what you eat, think, and feel, let alone the very personal significance of the symptoms, are totally irrelevant to the point of distraction from the matter at hand.

The “you” in your illness

It is clear to me, now, that there is deep meaning in illness, and a corresponding invitation designed especially for you. In fact, the medical literature is beginning to catch up with the concept, publishing articles entitled Symbolic Diseases and Mindbody Co-Emergence.

In this way, how you interpret your symptoms is everything.

Mindset has become the bedrock of my transformational medicine practice. My patients are invited to explore, examine, and become deeply aware of their beliefs. These beliefs determine how they experience suffering and the potential for self-healing activation. These beliefs give them the ability to trust that everything is going to be exactly as it needs to be.

These beliefs even override elements and aspects of our biology that we think of as cause and effect. I’m talking about everything from less blood loss in surgery to faster bone healing to less use of pain meds if a soldier knew his injury would lead to a dismissal home. What about infection? It’s about germ exposure, right? Perhaps it’s not so simple as germ exposure equals illness…

Do negative beliefs lead to illness?

Cohen et al report that the response to this simple question was the most meaningful determinant of clinical experience of the common cold: “In general, how would you rate your health?” After being inoculated with cold viruses, participants in Cohen’s study demonstrated that negative health perception led to the experience of common cold symptoms regardless of whether the immune system was reacting*. In other words, if someone had a positive health perception, got exposed, and had antibody confirmation of immune response, they did not manifest clinical symptoms of the cold (aka get sick). Now, it’s possible that positive and negative perceptions result from a sensed experience of an inflammatory state that would lead to more frequent infections, but this relationship between thoughts, emotions, and the immune system is tridirectional. Each arm as significant as the other.

Mind as body, body as mind

When symptoms of overwhelm, sadness, and hopelessness do emerge, however, more than a positive attitude may be required to suffer better, and to access the gift that the illness brings…answer the question that it asks.

The resolution of these symptoms may not call for fighting that’s called for, either. It may, in fact, be the opposite of fighting: an attitude of acceptance and non-resistance.

When we accept and allow, we unite with our body and our illness. Your experience is no longer one of a divided front with warring factions set out to kill at all costs.

In fact, I dug deep into the annals of medicine to find data from decades ago that was telling us that healing comes when we accept our health challenges.

healingmindset

healingmindset2

In other words, allowing struggle, pain, and suffering to just be, led to immune system improvement in these patients. Based on the work of renegade scientist Dr. Candace Pert, we have known for quite some time that the mind/body division is a false one. That illness manifests out of both spaces and resides in both spaces.

2 Tips to Try Today:

When my patients are in the darkness of their transformational birth canal, and when the struggle is crushing, and fear and hopelessness taunt them like some horrific circus clown, I talk to them as my midwife spoke to me when I was in the transition phase of active labor.

I tell them to watch for opportunities to unite with their experience rather than fight it:

1. Say yes when you want to say no

When your entire being is rejecting your experience, saying “I don’t want this. I can’t handle this. I could never bear a life of this.” Play with it and start a sentence with “Yes”. Try saying “Yes, I needed it to be this way to get where I am going next” or “Yes, this is hard. Really hard.” Or, simply, the word “Yes” over and over.

2. Do nothing when you want to do something

When your mind is saying “No”, you will almost immediately seek to fix the situation. Reach for a cookie or a beer, stay later at work, call that ex-boyfriend, give in to the medical intervention you know you don’t need. You will reach for a way to take the edge off the discomfort. But if you just sit with it, it changes. Just be with it. Watch it. And wait for the intensity of pain and sadness to transform. Float in the deep, scary water because if you flail around, you might drown the you that needs to be saved.

Watch your mind when you are in crisis. Play with it so that you can look with curiosity instead of fear on your experience. Understand that illness, pain, and suffering may be the portal to your more authentic self and all you have to do is allow it to unfold. Do this because it will accelerate your healing journey.

Commit to yourself… surrender to what is… and you will heal, transform, and experience a joy that is so far beyond the simple relief you thought you were seeking.

Poorer SRH also correlated with poorer health practices, increased stress, lower positive emotions, and other socioemotional factors. However, none of these (alone or together) accounted for the association between SRH and host resistance. Additional data (separate study) indicated that history of having colds was unrelated to susceptibility and hence also did not account for the SRH link with immunocompetence.”

3 Benefits of Infrared Saunas Compared to Traditional Saunas

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Can’t decide which type of sauna you’d like to purchase? Here are 3 benefits of infrared saunas over the traditional ones:

Far Infrared Sauna – BS-9225

Health Benefits
An infrared sauna looks similar to a traditional sauna except there aren’t any hot coals since the heat is emitted from the built-in infrared heaters, which are located in the sides and the top of the sauna (don’t worry, they aren’t even hot to touch). Unlike a normal sauna that heats up quite quickly, relaxes the body and opens up the pores for a serious sweat session, an infrared sauna safely penetrates deep into joints and muscles with the same rays that come from the sun — minus the UV radiation. Source: PopSugar

Power Needs
Another difference between a traditional sauna and an infrared sauna is the amount of power required to operate each unit. Traditional saunas require more overall power to run, with a typical sauna taking up 6 kw of power in comparison to the typical 1.6 kw needed for the infrared sauna. This means that a traditional sauna is almost three times as expensive to run as an infrared sauna. This can make a difference, depending on how often you use the unit. Source: Livestrong

Comfort and Safety
Conventional saunas operate at extremely high temperatures which may be unsafe for the very young or elderly. Further, surfaces in a traditional sauna can reach temperatures that can cause burns. Infrared saunas achieve the same benefits at far lower operating temperatures. Due to the harsh operating conditions in a traditional sauna, a sound system to enjoy while you are relaxing in your sauna is out of the question. On the other hand, you can enjoy your favorite music in an infrared sauna. Source: Evolution Health

3 Christmas Window Decorating Tips

Whatever theme you’re going for this year, your windows are one of the most fun to decorate. Make Christmas the most beautiful time of the year by doing the following easy tips on decorating your windows:

Hang Ornaments
Hang different colored ornaments at varying heights from the top of a window. You can use fishing line if you want them to look like they’re floating, or ribbon for a more colorful look. Try hanging some paper snowflakes in there to mix it up. Source: Punchbowl

Wreaths
Wreaths can look beautiful a window decorations in a lot of different settings. For example, the kitchen is a perfect example. However, make sure the wreaths are not displayed directly above the stove to avoid accidents. In addition, it would be best to opt for artificial wreaths given the humidity and everything else in the room.
You can also choose to display multiple wreath if, let’s say, the windows of your home are really large or if you want to decorate a glass door. You can mix and match several different wreaths with different dimensions and designs. Hang then with red ribbons from the curtain rod. Source: Homedit

Window Decals and Appliques
Windows are a blank canvas. You could buy decals, stencils, and other appliques or you could make your own. If you have a printer you can print out a paper stencil pattern of your choice and create the stencil from cardboard. To use a stencil you can tape it to the window temporarily and spray the window with artificial snow. You can also freehand whatever you wish onto the window by mixing dish washing liquid with cornstarch. To make your own appliques you can buy puff-paint from most stores with a craft section, print out Christmas images and lay a sheet of wax paper over them, trace the picture with puff-paint. Let it dry then peel and stick. Source: VisiHow
